Zavod is an industrial metal band from Västerås, Sweden, consisting of Konstantin Smirnov (vocals) and brothers Johan (synth, guitars) and Tomas Sannestedt (drums). After doing a little online research I found that the band used to be a foursome complete with a bassist, but according to their latest press release, they are currently at three members. The word "zavod" translates in English to "factory" and is taken from the Russian city of "Petrozavodsk" which is where the vocalist grew up. This explains the reasoning for some of his lyrics being in Russian while most are in English. Zavod was formed in 2006 and has spent the last 5 years honing their brand of metal, all the while working up to the release of their first self financed album which is currently out in 2011.

The eleven songs of "Industrial City" sound to my ears to be very much like Rammstein, although I can also loosely compare them to Muse and perhaps even Satyricon, if for no other reason than simply being in the same small offshoot of bands who fly the industrial metal banner. I personally don't think the United States is ready to accept another Rammstein (unless these guys have the money to outdo their live pyrotechnics - which I doubt) but I can see them being successful in Europe. The album production sounds very good and I can appreciate that these guys are good at what they do, but it's really just not my thing. If you like the music of Rammstein and crave another source, I would definitely get this album. You just can't keep those Swedes down these days….
