Farsot’s music style is quite decadent and mystifying. Many tend to categorize the band as a black metal act but the latest release “Insects” showcases multiple musical facets that include doom and progressive metal. The traditional black metal influence might still linger in the songs structure but the slow gloomy atmosphere is the true prominent element. “Like Flakes Of Rust” starts with tight and groovy guitar riffs and progressive style drum patterns. Spoken verses and raucous vocals follow the enigmatic feelings that pervade the song’s atmosphere. “Empyrean” is a very balanced song that offers a higher degree of variety. The atmosphere here is even more sinister with lovely dark orchestration but the softer acoustic guitars and keyboards break the main heavy doom structure and make it easier to listen to. “Adamantine Chains” is a very atmospheric piece that represents well the musical direction chosen by Farsot. Everything is filled with a mysterious aura. While the growls are performed in typical black metal fashion, the rhythm sections and the lead guitars remind more of modern doom. The mood on “The Vermilion Trail” is cold and dark. The melodious acoustic sections remind of Opeth’s music style. Again the distorted guitars are kind of groovy yet heavy without being excessively aggressive. The spoken verses here are quite surprising as the theme concerns some zoological characteristics of insects. “Somnolent” is an instrumental track that closes the album with a rather dreamy feeling. Again, the slow acoustic guitars are characterized by that melancholic mood that made Opeth famous. In the end, “Insects” is an interesting dark piece of music and, even if nothing here will blow your mind, it is definitely worth a good listening. http://www.farsot.de/ http://www.prophecyproductions.de/front_content.php?idcat=265&lang=1 |
