Hexentanz is a Virginia-based ritual ambient band who pay musical homage to Witchcraft in the Middle Ages with an eclectic fusion of dark medieval, primitive and even monastic influences. The quintet is comprised of five learned men and women from both within and without the occult tradition. A Magister of a sect known as The Order of Phosphorus and an author of several books dealing with magic (Michael Ford) and a holder of a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy with a focus on Comparative Religon (Michael Riddick) are a few of the scholars who comprise Hexentanz. Other members include Lux “Davcina” Fero, Dana Dark, and Mark Riddick. On the 2011 re-release of Nekrocrafte, Hexentanz have set out to create an eargasm of secular proportions, with a concept focused on the Witches Sabbat. Here the Witches Sabbat is not about unwilling animal or virginal sacrifice, as has been popularly thought. Rather, the Witches Sabbat is a rite of transcension. It is a symbolic journey of personal and spiritual growth from one stage to another. Herein, Satan is akin to a spirit guide. The participant has chosen Satan as their guide, rather than, say, the animal totem of the Native American. Yet the concept is similar. Witchcraft can then be considered on par with the perpetual quest of a Buddhist seeking enlightenment. Like a slow dirge through the forest to where the Sabbat is to begin, Midnight Procession is the opening track of Nekrocrafte. It is replete with the sound of pounding drums and a violin set to a medieval tune. Mark of the Beast, on the other hand, is a spoken word chant set to the feral beat of gyrating tribal drums. And, as the Black Mass is a blasphemous inversion of the Catholic Mass, so too is Birth Is Through Blood an impious use of monastic, Gregorian-esque choirs. Nekrocrafte is a worthy dark offering of an authentic Witches Sabbat experience. http://www.hexentanz.us/ http://www.agoniarecords.com/ |
