Before I was given the chance to write a review for the Ottawa, Canada-based, variously covering Extreme Metal genres, outfit Summer Darkyard, they were described to me as being somewhere along the lines of “Cocteau Twins meets Black Metal”. I admit that that combination seemed irresistible. A band with an elegance bordering on ethereal Shoegaze and yet also with the balls to hang with the most brutal of them. At the same time it seemed a fusion that was too eclectic to be true. But I was pleasantly surprised upon giving “The Sun Through A Telescope” a listen. Admittedly, some of the eccentricities come across forced…But in most other places they actually work. ‘Darkyard’, the opening track of “The Sun Through a Telescope” begins with faint music heard through a mighty zephyr. From out of nowhere a guttural voice and distorted guitars sounds. But this only happens every five seconds or so…At which time it trades places with the calmer, more ethereal music once more. “I’ll Die, Goodbye” can be thought of as the album’s “Slow number”. It’s reminiscent of Sigur Ros, making use of a slower and more balladic Art-Rock sound. All in all, Summer Darkyard’s “The Sun Through A Telescope” aptly manages to navigate the hopefulness of Shoegaze and the hopelessness of Black Metal.
